  • Walnut islands contrast with the white perimeter cabinets and, from this angle, lead the eye to the kitchen’s pièce de résistance: the range hood.

  • Mullioned cabinet doors create visual depth; they display coordinating tableware.

Color and creativity combine in fund-raiser.

Peter Salerno’s design for the kitchen has an understated opulence. “My inspiration was the grandeur of this beautiful home. I knew the kitchen needed to make a luxurious statement.” The smoked crystal chandeliers over the islands were just the beginning. Salerno calls the range hood “the focal point of this kitchen” and describes its extraordinary provenance: “The material that this ‘jewel’ was wrapped in came from a hotel ceiling in San Diego dating to the Gold Rush era. Made of reclaimed tin, it was cut, welded, painted, glazed and antiqued. It took the artisan three months to create. The homeowner now has something to enjoy forever, a beautiful, one-of-a-kind piece.”

The Designer Showhouse of New Jersey was in a Saddle River home built by Joseph DiStaulo Homes. The event benefited Hackensack University Medical Center (hackensackumc.org).
