This Bathroom Has Ageless Appeal

Timeless materials and contemporary touches team up with ageless appeal in a shore retreat
What could be more chic—or enduring—than the pairing of black and white? Here in a Mantoloking, New Jersey, master bathroom, the owners wanted a different look from the rest of the home’s classic grand cottage theme. Accordingly, Victor Moldovan, a member of the American Society of Interior Designers, and Shannon Fox of Moldovan Interior Design in Toms River, New Jersey, and Atlanta, Georgia, used the effects of black and white marble in inventive ways: as a horizontal grid pattern on the walls, which ties in with the floor’s basket-weave “rug” pattern.
Although it is one of two master bathrooms in the home, “it is not a large bath by today’s standards,” Fox says. Continuing the linear insets of Basalt black matte liner every third row along the walls and wrapping it around the shower “makes the room feel larger,” she says. Two round mirrors deliver a porthole effect, a “nod toward the overall nautical theme of the waterfront home.”
The granite-topped contemporary vanity has a dark walnut stain, polished nickel fittings and lots of storage. “To keep it airy, we left the base open for a large shelf for linens,” Fox says. Heated floors keep toes toasty in the off-season, and the wide drain in the shower “drains faster and looks sleeker than a conventional round drain,” Fox notes.
