A Wall Township bathroom in a 1980s home gets an update for a new century

Modern—in looks as well as in function—is the keyword for a master bathroom that designer Joe Parisi remodeled in a 1980s Wall Township home.

Parisi increased the light and volume of the first-floor room by adding a vaulted ceiling with a skylight and windows over the double vanity and behind the tub. Recessed lighting and task lights at each sink are important to the design too, says Parisi, principal of Joseph Parisi Interiors in New York City. Topping it off: a spaceship-like Nelson light that adds drama with its nod to timeless modern design.

All the natural and added light calls attention to gleaming surfaces that range from a stainless steel tub and fireplace frame to white marble flooring and black accents all around.

Parisi brought the shower into the twenty-first century by redesigning it to include a bench, a range of head and body sprays, and a curved glass enclosure that adds architectural character. Parisi worked with Donna Martin of Tiled Interiors in Red Bank, who recommended shaved black pebble tiles by Maniscalco for the shower floor (easy to stand on), black porcelain strie wall tiles by Akdo for the shower walls and a ribbon of Alea “Titanium” tiles on the bench wall for bling. Parisi and Martin installed white Carrera marble tiles with inset strips of black absolute granite on the floor.

A standout feature of the bathroom: a vanity wall measuring 17 feet long and reaching 20 feet high covered with Solistone black glass pebbles, each one installed individually. Martin showed a sample of the tile to Parisi, who suggested using it on the entire wall.

Closets along one wall were redesigned as more complete his and her dressing spaces, and a shallow middle closet was turned into a built-in display cabinet. The door closest to the vanity leads to an existing sauna.

“I had a great time working with Donna Martin as well as with Matt Sniffen and John Kelly of Katin Builders,” Parisi says. “We made a great team, and the homeowners are enjoying the results.
